The Siemens Sitrans P is an explosion proof, absolute pressure measurement and transmission device which can be calibrated or configured locally or remotely, as a smart instrument using the HART protocol.
Where conventional operation is needed, there is no need to power down their transmitter. All the main instrument functions can be accessed without removing the instrument cover.
Shell Expro is receiving over 400 Sitrans P Pressure transmitters for its Shearwater field, 200km east of Aberdeen.
Siemens claims the device was chosen because it combines flow, level and pressure capabilities as well as smart calibration facilities.
The Shearwater field was discovered less than ten years ago and is being developed by Shell Expro as operator on behalf of co-venturers Shell UK, Esso, ARCO and Mobil at a cost of some £800 million. Deliveries are due in October 1998.
