Acid test for citric plant
15 Jan 2000
ABS (acrylobutyl styrene) is often used for its acid and alkali resistance. Tate & Lyle, for example, used the material when updating the demineralisation plant at its citric acid works in Selby.
The plant, designed and built by Durapipe, handles sulphuric acid and caustic soda solutions, both at 15 per cent strength, as well as raw and treated water. ABS is well suited to the food products industry because, unlike other plastics, it doesn't contain heavy metal stabilisers which could leach out into the water.
