Corrosion advice
15 Jan 2000
The National Physical Laboratory has appointed Geoff Archer as manager of its corrosion advisory service. Archer, has over 20 years' experience of dealing with corrosion issues such as design, prevention and failure analysis.
Other initiatives underway at the NPL include an update of `Guides to practice in corrosion control'. This will include sections on bimetallic corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and corrosion factors in pumps and valves.
Another current project will develop a new methodology to predict the lifetime of steels which undergo corrosion by pit development. Industrial applications being considered in this project are the corrosion of 316L stainless steel by chlorine-containing organic acids, and 12Cr and 3Ni-Cr steels in high-purity water at high temperatures.
