Environmental benefits from PCI
15 Jan 2000
Two recent applications of membrane filters engineered by PCI Membrane Systems demonstrate the increasing popularity of the technology for environmental protection.
The first involves a process known as ZERO (zero environmental release option) that has been perfected by US company Diversified Technologies Services. The process uses membrane filtration to recover high quality water from low-level radioactive wastewater produced in the nuclear power industry. PCI membranes are used to treat the water through ultrafiltration and multi-stage RO.
The second system is Reco-CIP for chemical recovery from cleaning systems. A 38-module system is about to go into a US dairy where it will recover cleaning caustic, neutralise it with acid and then blend it with mother liquor from the dairy's lactose crystalliser. The resultant mixture can then be used as a liquid animal feed, reducing the waste produced by the dairy.
