PP heads the resin market
15 Jan 2000
Demand for polypropylene is set to outstrip all the other major thermoplastics, growing by 6 per cent annually until 2002, according to a report from market researchers at the Freedonia Group.
The polymer is gaining ground in packaging applications at the expense of PVCand polystyrene, says the report, while other sectors - especially fibres and consumer goods - are also showing `solid gains'. Consumer goods applications are set to expand as PP supplants traditional engineering resins, with the strongest gains for high-impact and random copolymer PP grades.
The fastest growing market is in China, says Freedonia, and the region is also the world's largest PP importer. The rest of Asia, however, represents a shrinking market. Latin America offers `favourable long-term growth.'
