Rover colours it green with Elga
15 Jan 2000
At the Rover Group's Cowley car plant, a new paint shop is reflecting the car industry's moves to more environmentally friendly manufacturing. More aqueous paints are now being used in preference to the traditional solvent-based finishes and water-treatment specialist Elga has just installed a demineralised water purification plant as part of the paint shop.
The system will deliver 20m3/h of demin water, seven days a week, 22 hours a day, for pre-rinsing, rinsing between coats, final cleaning and as a base for the 15 different paint colours that Rover uses.
Key components of the system include pretreatment, advanced counter-current deionisation, UV sterilisation and a central control panel. The system is the key to Rover's pledge to minimise the amount of water used in each process of paint finishing to no more than 90 litres per car.
