Mixing on the grand scale
15 Jan 2000
Pictured here is a large-scale, top-entry mixer drive from Plenty Mixers, undergoing dynamic testing of its cartridge mechanical seal.
When fitted with its full size motor, the final drive unit will be some 6.2m tall, with the mixing impeller system adding another 9.5m to the whole assembly. Plenty believes that the unit - one of three recent similar contracts - is one of the biggest fluid mixer agitators ever built in the UK.
All three units include complex cartridge seals, sealant systems and special materials of construction. The mixer drives are part of a standard range and are rated at over 2000kW.
The gearboxes, which are also made by Plenty, are specifically designed for agitator duty. They have larger than standard output shafts and bearings to withstand the high radial and fluctuating loads of mixing processes.
