Foster Wheeler's successful stab at total safety
15 Jan 2000
It may seem odd to honour the world's safest companies by giving them an offensive weapon, but Foster Wheeler Energy isn't complaining. Handling a naked blade without hand protection are Sir Neville Purvis (left), director-general of the British Safety Council, presenting the BSC Sword of Honour to FJ Tomlin of Foster Wheeler.
The sword 'recognises companies that have devised and implemented safety systems that protect people, plant and equipment,' says the BSC. If every business met this standard, comments Purvis, 'the country would save £8 billion -16 billion by cutting injuries, ill health, compensation, fines and court cases.'
