Alstom to supply power to Santee Cooper
19 Nov 2002
Alstom has been awarded a contract valued at more than 162 million Euros by Santee Cooper, South Carolina's state-owned electric and water utility.
According to Alstom, the award covers the design, supply, construction, start-up and commissioning of a 640 MW coal-fired boiler and associated auxiliary equipment.
The new unit will be located at Santee Cooper's Cross Generating Station in Berkeley County, near Cross, South Carolina.
Santee Cooper is scheduled to break ground on the project in December 2002, with commercial operation projected by January 2007.
The new boiler will be the third generating unit at Santee Cooper's Cross Generating Station. It will burn coal supplied from Kentucky, as well as up to 30 per cent of petroleum coke, a residue from petroleum refining. Alstom has previously supplied Cross Unit 2 at this station, a 540 MW coal-fired unit put into service in 1983.
The new boiler will reportedly provide the Cross Station with greater operating flexibility and efficiency, with extremely low Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions.
