Euro power worth billions
20 Jan 2003
The Siemens Power Generation Group (PG) has secured power plant orders totalling over 1.3 billion Euros from Germany, Spain, Morocco and Mexico.
The utility GEW RheinEnergie AG in Germany has contracted PG to construct a combined heat and power plant in Cologne, representing a total investment of around 250 million Euros. In northern Spain, Siemens will build a combined-cycle power plant with a capacity of 760 MW. The order is valued at around 550 million Euros. Siemens will also construct a 384MW combined-cycle plant valued at over 400 million Euros in Morocco in the vicinity of Tangiers. The Group also secured an order in Mexico valued at over 180 million Euros for the construction of two simple cycle power plants.
Under contract to GEW RheinEnergie AG, Siemens will build a district heating combined-cycle power plant as a turnkey project at the Niehl port in Cologne to replace an existing 26-year-old plant. The new plant , with an electrical capacity of 400 MW, will generate power and as much as 265 MW of heat. In addition to the electrical, instrumentation and control equipment, PG will also deliver one gas turbine, one steam turbine and two generators. Siemens will also handle gas turbine maintenance for a period of twelve years. Following commissioning in September 2004, the plant will be able to supply up to a million households with electricity and provide district heat for up to 300,000 apartments.
In Arrubal near Logrono in Spain, Siemens will build a new combined-cycle power plant for Gas Natural, the country's leading gas supplier. Siemens will construct the plant as a turnkey project and will supply two gas turbines and two steam turbines as well as associated equipment. The two natural-gas-fired units are scheduled to feed electricity into the Spanish grid in 2004. Siemens will also be responsible for plant operation and maintenance for twelve years.
Siemens' combined-cycle power plant in Tahaddart is located 30 km south of Tangiers on Morocco's Atlantic coast. The purchaser of this turnkey plant is Tangiers-based Energie Electrique de Tahaddart SA, a company specially founded for this purpose. In addition to the state-owned Moroccan utility Office Nationale de l`Electricité (ONE) which will have a stake of 48%, the other stakeholders are the Spanish Endesa SA (32%) and Siemens Power Ventures GmbH (20%).
For this installation, PG will supply a gas turbine, a steam turbine, an electrical generator, a heat-recovery steam generator, and the instrumentation and control equipment. Siemens is also responsible for erection of the 13km-long link to the Maghreb-Europe pipeline, which will supply the power plant with natural gas. PG will also provide plant operation and maintenance for 20 years. The plant is scheduled to be operational starting in early 2005.
Siemens has also secured an order in Mexico too. Here, PG will supply two turnkey simple cycle power plants for the state-owned utility Comision Federal de Electicidad (CFE). One plant with two gas turbine units and a combined capacity of 263 MW will be built in San Lorenzo, which is located southeast of Mexico City. Siemens also will construct a 162 MW gas power plant in Tuxpan, which is located north of Mexico City on the Gulf of Mexico. The two natural-gas-fired plants are scheduled to provide electricity to Mexico's grid in November 2003.
