BNFL attacks Leningrad
8 Jan 2003
Nuclear remediation and decommissioning specialist BNFL Environmental Services is to take on the task of improving safety at two Chernobyl-style reactors at the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant.
The project, part of the European Commission-funded Tacis programme to improve safety at former Soviet nuclear sites, is set to last for 30 months.
BNFL has signed a PMU (Project Management Unit) contract, which has two parts. First, the company will manage the installation of a new diverse shutdown control and protection system for two of the plant's four RBMK reactors, which produce over 1000MWe for electricity. The work includes modification to the reactors' control rod systems.
The company will also handle other EC-funded areas, such as consultancy on project management, decommissioning planning and preparation, operation and maintenance personnel and supply projects management.
Says PMU director Ian Jamieson: 'We need to ensure that the project is a success for the Russians, so that they are able to transfer these new project skills to their work on other plants in the RBMK fleet.'
