Greenhouse - free fossil fuel
29 Mar 2000
A project to extract methane from deep coal beds is about to enter its third phase, with the first full-scale test of a system developed by the Alberta Research Council in Canada. The technique involves injecting flue gases - carbon dioxide, nitrogen and hydrogen - into highly permeable coal beds, where it adsorbs onto the coal and dislodges methane. The flue gases then remain in the ground. The first trials will be at Mannville, with further tests planned at Ardingly and Edmonton.
