Raising the roof
3 May 2000
Raising the roof - on the grand scale. Using two giant fans, the 770tonne roof of one of the biggest natural gas storage tanks in the world, being built by Kvaerner in Dabhoi, India, has been blown into position on top of the 80m diameter, 14m high tank.
The lifting operation took seven hours, with each fan blowing out 900ft3/min of air to gently raise the roof. The £175million turnkey project is the first fully integrated partnership between Kvaerner Construction and Kvaerner E&C, who are responsible to Enron wich is managing the construction of the LNG facilities for the Dabhol Power Company.
Project director, Kvaerner's Roy Isden, commenting on the remoteness of the site, said `the construction and process engineering is straightforward - it is the logistics that is the key to the success of the job.'
