Engineers challenge Chancellor
3 May 2000
According to the Engineering Employers' Federation, the failure of the Chancellor of the Exchequer to make any further reform to the Climate Change Levy in last month's Budget leaves many engineering and manufacturing companies facing damagingly high energy costs and will deter future investment in energy efficiency technologies.
Particularly criticised is the decision to restrict `negotiated agreements' for energy reductions only to those companies covered by IPPC regulations. The EEF has proposed that any company able to negotiate energy reduction targets should receive substantial reductions in the levy, giving them a greater chance to invest in energy efficiency measures.
