PLC brings colour to Ciba
12 Jun 2000
Ciba Speciality Chemical's plant in Paisley, Scotland, has installed the latest PLC, the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix from Rockwell Automation.
The plant manufactures organic pigments used in printing inks, plastics and synthetic fibres and paints. The milling plant makes an aqueous dispersion, with the complete process consisting of storage tanks, milling, processing and packaging. There are a total of 80 PLCs with software that allows engineers to view all the active networks through a single window. All the I/Os from the plant are logged as well as other process information. Weight, temperature and pH of a given batch can be viewed and the process controlled.
New features in the I/O modules have meant the floating point values can be taken in from an analogue card; built in ramping gives smooth acceleration of variable speed drives and digital filtering on inputs from flow and pressure can be used.
