IN BRIEF: Weir wins power station refurb

A consortium comprising Weir Engineering Services and Dowding & Mills has won a £4.25 million contract to refurbish the Clachan hydro power station by the end of the year. The contract covers the complete mechanical/electrical refurbishment of the 40MW Francis turbine generators and associated plant.
Clachan, which has the largest conventional hydro turbine machine in the UK, is situated near the head of Loch Fyne in Argyll. It is owned by Scottish and Southern Energy which is aiming to refurbish all its major hydro stations over the next 15 years.
