Brewery relies on UV to keep the bitter at its best

With a history dating back to 1790 Harveys Brewery in Lewes, East Sussex, naturally takes pride in its range of draught beers, including Harveys Sussex Best Bitter. To protect that heritage - and the quality of all of its 35 000 barrels produced each year - the company recently installed a water treatment system to protect its processes from any water-borne microbial contamination.
The Hanovia ultraviolet disinfection system chosen treats all the process water drawn from an artesian well, with the UV destroying all organisms such as bacteria, yeasts and moulds. But as UV does not affect the pH or chemical composition of the water, the flavour of the beer is unaltered.
Head brewer Miles Jenner says: `Although the quality of water from our well is sound, we wanted to ensure that there was no subsequent microbial contamination in-line.'
