Tiny particles make large impact
7 Apr 2000
A joint research project into the production of nano materials is under way in Germany at a cost of DM 20 million. For three years a team comprising 14 staff from Degussa-Huls, a company producing fine powders, and scientists from seven German universities have focused on the production of tiny particles to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms leading to the formation of nano particles.
These particles are produced from a wide range of starting products by chemical reaction and condensation in gas phase reactors at temperatures of up to 2400 degrees C.
The size and shape of the particles determine their properties and therefore their applications. Nano powders can be used for a wide range of applications, in polishing wafers, metal and glass.
