Genesis of double silicone
29 Mar 2000
Dow Corning is on a mission. Through the so-called Genesis project, the company plans to make its Barry site the most technologically advanced silicone manufacturing plant of its kind in the world, with double its current level of production.
But it did have a problem: for safety the upgraded plant required six new emergency shut down systems - two for burner management and four for the silicone plant itself. These must be sensitive enough to cut in should an emergency arise, but still allow fast repair and maintenance to the plant. Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Fault Tolerant ESD systems from ICS Triplex were chosen to fit the bill.
In total, the six new systems involve 850 plus TMR fault tolerant I/O channels and associated processors and services. Maintenance is planned with the aid of powerful diagnostics. And repairs can be undertaken without shutting down the ESD.
