Bertrams gets its just deserts
22 Aug 2000
Swiss process technology specialist Bertrams has landed a contract to process Chile saltpetre - naturally occurring sodium nitrate -into a form that can be handled easily for transport and further processing. The company is to build a plant in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, which will convert the brittle, lumpy nitrate crystals into fine spherical particles called prills.
The process involves melting the crystals, then spray-cooling the liquid to form the prill particles.
