Achema action
22 Aug 2000
Last month's Achema jamboree in Frankfurt (see PE May 2000, p43) once again saw enough new products and processes launched to fill a whole issue. But, as the event happens only every three years, we have the excuse for filtering our coverage of the show's highlights into the next few issues.
As a taster, though, we can start with, what else, a new filter - or rather a new filter medium. At first sight, YMAX, from the German company GKD (203 on enquiry card), is a conventional stainless steel wire woven mesh. But look more closely and you see that the interstices between the wire weaves are themselves filled with wire fibres. What this composite structure therefore offers, for the first time says GKD's Peter Wirtz, is a stainless steel filter that combines the properties of surface filtration with those of depth filtration in a single medium - and one that can be supplied in widths up to 3.5m and lengths to 20m, suitable for one-piece fitting into the largest of filters.
* Following its recent formation after a management buy-out of the Scapa Group's Specialty Materials Division, UK-based Madison Filter (204 on enquiry card) used Achema to fly its new flag and launch several new products, such as the NuTrak guidance system for filter belts. NuTrak increases vacuum filter efficiency by improve belt sealing performance.
