Faraday Centre focuses on plastic
22 Aug 2000
Plastics consultancy Rapra Technology and Warwick Manufacturing Group are to manage a new government-sponsored research centre focusing on developing new applications for plastics. The new Faraday Centre will be funded by the DTI and EPSRC, and will foster links between academic researchers and small-to-medium sized plastics firms. Public funding, from UK and European sources, could be as high as £5million in the first year.
Faraday Plastics, one of four new Faraday Centres joining the existing four set up in 1997, will be based at Rapra's Shropshire facility. Initially, the partners will set up a steering group to identify research `themes' and projects, which will then be assigned to universities and other research bodies. The goal will always be to disseminate the results of these projects to industry, through methods such as a website which will act as a `help-desk', and through on-line conferences.
Prof Kumar Bhattacharyya, director of Warwick Manufacturing, comments that the centre `will bring a new impetus to the sector and help to generate future success.'
