Chlorine plant ~ Ca analyses at ppb level!
4 Aug 2006
Electrolysis of brine requires Ca levels in the solution to be low: break through of Ca at the brine purification stage will cause major process upsets down stream, whilst too early replacements of membranes are also undesirable.
The maintaining of low Ca levels in the brine solution is of very important so as to avoiding the premature replacement of the membranes and loss of valuable production time down stream. Hence the requirement, to have this analysis done frequently, to be able to timely monitor any break through of Ca and alert process operation is highly desirable! The analysis of low ppb levels of Ca requires exceptional skills and a few ppb's of Ca are easily being picked up by taking grab samples and analysing them in the laboratory but this could lead to a high analysis result and false alert due to the lag between sampling and analysis. For these reasons attempts have been made to put the analysis on-line but in the past this has been difficult due to long term sensitivity or crystallisation problems caused by the heavily laden brine solution. Applikon have produced the best option for this application on-line using the Applikon Process Colorimeter ADI 2015, which truly mimics the laboratory test and delivers comparable results.
The ADI 2015 sturdy design and operation are obtaining amazingly long up times of the Analyzer, brought about by :
* Complete separation of the sampling devise and measurement vessel, allowing independent washing cycles.
* The use of a dipping probe colorimeter, allowing a reference measurement to be taken before each analysis.
* The use of a high precision burettes to dispense the concentrated indicator solution.
The 2015 Process Colorimeter is well geared up for the harsh conditions at a chlorine product- ion site: it is housed in a rugged steel shell, heavy duty coated and comes with a transparent door to allow visual inspection but denies unauthorised access. Besides providing accurate results the 2015 also can perform an automatic calibration, either on the basis of a set time or by a previously set condition (if-statement).
