Sumitomo raises the milling standard with Super ZX Inserts

Building on it’s successful introduction of nano technology coated cutting tools, Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal has developed a new range of indexable insert endmills offering customers a cost effective solution for precision milling applications using machining centres and the live milling spindle (B axis) on Mill-Turn machines.

As consumer product life cycles shorten (e.g. regularly changing your mobile phone) the demands on manufacturers for tighter tolerances, improved surface finish, lower prices, and shorter lead times increase.

As a result indexable insert endmills previously associated with roughing operations are now expected to produce finished parts at high feed rates and superior surface finish.

The new range of WEX 3000 cutters includes indexable inserts with increased edge length for deeper cuts, double positive geometry for high feed rates, wave shaped geometries for a soft cutting action, and a 90 degree shoulder milling capability.

The new range of coated insert grades are the result of super hard PVD nano technology coatings comprising 2000 layers of titanium aluminium nitride and aluminium chromium nitrides to substantially enhance coating strength.

Compared to competitors’ grades claimed to be around 2300HV the new SUPER ZX coatings at 5200HV offer outstanding wear resistance whilst oxidation temperatures have increased by over 200%.

In comparison with conventional grades Sumitomo SUPER ZX inserts more than double tool life when milling steels, stainless steels and cast irons whilst enabling feed rate increases of 50%.

For a conventionally priced cutter with 90 degree shoulder milling capability and an introductory price (limited period) the new range of WEX cutters and Super ZX inserts looks set to raise the standard of fast, high precision, cost effective milling.
