Improved infrared thermometer provides accurate, reliable temperature measurement of glass
23 Oct 2006
The glass industry's most successful infrared thermometer for glass melting applications with over 6000 systems installed world-wide ˆ the LAND Fibroptic Model FG - has had a major update.
The newly improved Model FG fibre optics based, two-wire infrared thermometer is a simple, cost effective alternative to conventional thermometers that require water-cooling and can also be installed without difficulty to upgrade or replace thermocouple installations.
A range of models is available for temperature measurement spans from 980 to 1650°C/1800 to 3000°F.
Primarily intended for monitoring and controlling glass or refractory temperatures in the forehearth, Model FG is also ideal for use in the regenerator, tank and refiner, and has been used for other temperature measurement duties around the furnace.
Time-proven applications include monitoring and safeguarding vulnerable refractory materials such as the crown; detecting possible firing imbalance at the port arch; and improving control of bulk glass temperatures.
The Model FG's signal processor unit is mounted remotely from the high ambient temperatures encountered at the optic head by a sealed 6.1m/20ft long fibre optics light guide, thereby eliminating the need for water cooling.
An armoured stainless steel sheath protects the light guide, which has additional insulation to prevent any RF feedback in the process area.
Installation is quick and simple. The versatile adjustable mounting assembly, which comes complete with a quick release adapter and air purge, makes periodic removal for inspection purposes easy.
The processor provides high accuracy linearization of the detector signal, adjustable emissivity from 0.10 to 1.00, and a low drift 4 to 20mA output suitable for process computers and distributed control systems. A built-in test function in the processor provides a quick and easy customer check ensuring that the electronics are giving an accurate system output. No additional calibration is required.
The simple 2-wire design senses polarity and switches to the correct connection and is capable of surviving accidental over-voltage connection to 250V a.c.
