BASF restarts plant after chemical leak

Incident occurred during "non-routine operation.” Worker remains in critical condition
Manchester, UK – BASF plc has decided to restart the hexamethylenediamine plant at its Seal Sands site on Teesside, which was the scene of a serious chemical lead on 4 Jan. The decision, it said, was taken after careful consideration and discussions with the Health and Safety Executive.
The company is continuing with its investigations into a leak of hexamethylenediamine from a pipeline at the nylon intermediates plant. Two employees remain in hospital following the incident, with one still in a critical condition.
Initial investigations showed that the incident occurred “during a non-routine operation,” said a BASF statement, adding that “we have identified the immediate cause of the leak.” However, the company said it would not comment further until that investigation is completed.
