New miniature diffuse sensors have highly focussed cylindrical beam
21 Mar 2007
New from Contrinex is a range of high power, miniature, rectangular sensors that produces a narrowly focussed, cylindrical light beam that is less than 4mm in diameter and yet has a detection distance of 50mm. This long sensing range with a parallel beam makes possible accurate and reliable detection of objects through small holes and gaps. The sensors can also be used for differentiating between closely aligned or laterally approaching objects that are at different distances from the sensor.
Measuring only 5 x 7mm with a 40mm long, stainless steel housing, this small, tough sensor is fully self-contained and requires no additional support amplifier. A high precision, infra red beam (880nm wavelength) is projected through a scratch resistant, easy to clean, sapphire lens producing a high intensity light that is pulsed to ensure no interference can occur from direct sunlight or other bright light sources.
When the sensor first detects a target, an amber flashing LED indicates that the distance from the object is at the limit of the sensing range or that the alignment requires adjustment. This LED shines constantly once the sensor is adjusted correctly and is locked-on to the target and will flash again if dirt builds-up on the lens during use or misalignment occurs at any time.
A common problem encountered with diffuse devices with a comparatively wide beam spread is that they are prone to pick up false targets either side of the intended target line. These new Contrinex sensors are not prone to this fault because of the extremely narrow beam width. In addition, they are less costly and easier to install than fibre-optic solutions and they will prove particularly useful in replacing larger sensors where mounting space is limited.
The sensors are short-circuit proof, have voltage reversal protection and operate over a voltage range of 10 to 30 VDC with an output current of up to 100mA. They are fully vacuum-potted and protected to IP67.
