New £12m facility in Dagenham will turn plastics bottles into food packaging
Manchester, UK -- Haden Freeman Group (HFL) is to construct what it said is the UK’s first ever recycling plant to turn plastic bottles into food packaging. Birwelco -- a HFL company that specialises in recycling technology -- will run the £12-million project. which is located in Dagenham.
Opening in December 2007, the plant will be operated by Closed Loop London and will turn 35,000 tonnes/year of water, soft drinks and cosmetics PET bottles into new food packaging.
Marks & Spencer has committed to sending plastic waste from its London stores to the plant and is also encouraging its packaging suppliers to source recycled PET from the plant.
The project is being funded by private partners including Foresight Venture Partners and Allied Irish Bank. It will also receive public sector funding from the London Development Agency and WRAP (Waste & Resources Acton Programme).
“The pioneering technology used in this process represents a milestone for recycling in the UK,” said Nigel Hirst, HFL managing director. “As the first plant of its kind, we are committed to delivering a successful project which can be replicated nationwide.”
