Drax Power Station orders Esshete steel
15 May 2007
London -- Sandvik Materials Technology has won a new order, worth over £1 million, to supply Esshete 1250 (EN 1.4892) steel grade boiler tubes to the Drax Power Station in Selby, UK, Sandvik announced 15 May.
According to Sandvik, the order is required as replacement superheater tubing to cover outage needs during 2007 and covers several different tube sizes; of outer diameters between 38 and 67 mm.
The project, claims Sandvik, highlights the suitability of Esshete 1250 for use “in superheater and reheater units in coal-fired power generation and its specification as a standard design material in UK power stations.”
Esshete 1250 is a high strength, austenitic CrNiMn steel. The grade was developed in response to industry demands to utilise higher pressures and temperatures than were suitable for the normal austenitic steel grades.
Drax Power Station is owned and operated by Drax Power Limited and is the largest coal-fired power station in the UK. The output capacity of its six generators is 4000 megawatts, which at current output levels provides around 7% of the UK’s electricity needs.
