Moeller labels in many tongues!
21 Aug 2007
If, like Lannguth, you supply custom-built labelling machines to almost every part of the world, there are a lot of options you’ll need to cover. Your machines must handle labels of almost any size and shape and they must work with wet adhesive, dry adhesive and with self-adhesive labels. In addition, every one of them needs a convenient operator interface that works in the end user’s local language.
Faced with the not inconsiderable challenge of addressing these requirements, the Lannguth design team found that there was one product range which offered the necessary combination of flexibility and economy: Moeller Electric’s XV400 family of touch-screen display units.
Based on a single hardware platform, these units can either operate as an HMI only, or as an HMI that also offers programmable controller functionality. The operational mode is determined by an interchangeable pre-programmed Compact Flash card, and changing from one mode to the other involves no more than changing the card.
For Lannguth, combining HMI and PLC functionality in a single compact and cost-effective unit creates the opportunity for significant cost savings, as well as reducing the complexity and physical size of the control system.
Moeller’s XV400 touch-screen displays are available with 5.7-inch, 10.4-inch and 12.1-inch colour screens. All types use infrared touch-screen technology, and feature a scratchproof safety glass front, which makes them an excellent choice for food industry applications.
As standard, they support RS232, USB, Ethernet and CAN communications, while Profibus DP or MPI can be added with an option card. This excellent connectivity makes it possible for the labelling machine control system to exchange data with other machines, thereby enhancing the efficiency and functionality of the whole production line.
In the Lannguth application, the configuration of container and label data is carried out automatically, with the Moeller XV400 able to manage “recipes” for labelling around 200 different products.
Since the XV400 units used have two Compact Flash card slots, the recipe data can be kept separate from the control programs, which makes the system particularly easy to update. In addition, by using the Ethernet facilities of the XV400, new recipes can be downloaded automatically from SCADA and other higher-level systems.
A further benefit of the Lannguth system is its ability to display text in languages, such as Russian and Chinese, which do not use the Roman alphabet. This means that there is little problem in customising the operator interface for countries where such languages are used.
Moeller Electric’s innovative XV400 touch-screen display units are giving Lannguth a substantial advantage in the competitive world market for labelling machines. This was confirmed by Alfred Potthoff, head of Lannguth’s electrical engineering department, who said, “The XV400 enables us to optimise the functional and financial benefits of our machines, thereby delivering an even more attractive solution for our customers.”
