Petrobras signs simulation technology deal

Southpointe, Pennsylvania - Brazilian oil & gas major Petrobras has extended an agreement covering the use of multiple simulation and modeling applications from ANSYS for product and process design applications across its production, refining and processing operations.
Petrobras engineers already use Ansys technology to carry out complex computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies of the flow behavior inside various equipment. The CFD simulations help them modify processes and equipment and test new scenarios to increase the efficiency and reliability of the company's refinery operations.
"Simulation-driven product and process development is helping us to improve the performance of refining equipment through the study and application of new technologies. It is a key element of our innovation strategy and in maintaining our global leadership," said Maucir de Almeida, refining process optimisation manager at Petrobras headquarters.
Petrobras also employs engineering simulation tools to evaluate the feasibility of sourcing and transporting new petroleum supplies from small reservoirs, deep waters and harsh environments. The challenges of such projects were highlighted by Petrobras' recent discovery at Tupi field, where the reserves are located under a thick layer of salt, four and half miles beneath the ocean's surface.
Petrobras' operations are divided into Exploration & Production, Gas & Energy, Supply, and International, ranging from oil and gas exploration to distribution, passing through refining and supply. With 2006 sales of $14 billion and 68,000 employees, the Rio de Janeiro-based company operates more than 100 production platforms, 16 refineries and 6,000 gas stations.
