Experts lined up for SOLIDS show
22 Feb 2008
London - Visitors to this year’s easyFairs SOLIDS event 11-12 March at Birmingham’s NEC can tap into expert opinion in areas ranging from plant efficiency and materials handling to health & safety and environmental legislation. The support is being offered via case studies and workshops as part of the learnShop programme of seminars at the show.
Presenters will include Mike Cliff, AstraZeneca’s principal engineering technologist, who will explain how the pharma giant saved $500,000 by introducing a novel particle segregation system in its powder processing. United Biscuit process development controller, John Barnes will cover "Future challenges in the solids handling industry", while British Sugar senior technical services manager Alan Dempsey is hosting a seminar entitled: “A Process Operator’s Perspective: The Implementation of DSEAR on Mechanical Handling Equipment”.
Recent research by easyFairs revealed that 53% of UK process operators believed hopper and silo providers displayed little or no product innovation. In response, professor Mike Bradley, of the Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology, is a presenting a learnShop on designs for good hopper discharge. Other seminar themes include bulk solid level measurement, high containment screening, continuous weighing systems, efficient blending, ATEX certification, quantifying Residual Explosion Risks, dust control, and how businesses can meet COSHH and emission limits.

Representatives from bodies such as the Environment Agency and Envirowise will guide delegates through the legislation. There will also be a series of case-studies from prominent process operators, including a session on resource efficiency from Lafarge Cement, and a session entitled ‘Moving Forward from Environmental Management to Sustainability’ by Ibstock Brick Ltd.
Other learnShop seminar speakers will examine the latest technologies and solutions to improve plant efficiency, minimise waste and monitor emissions, whilst offering best practice case studies from businesses around the world. There will be a total of 32 keynote speeches, plus a free Lunchtime Briefing (both days 12.30pm – 1pm) presented by Michael Glass of PICME on ‘How to get more output from your plant’.
