Emerson advances wireless float switch

London - Emerson Process Management has announced that its Mobrey float switches are now available for use with its Rosemount 702 wireless discrete transmitter, allowing plant managers more cost-effective access to data about the performance and safety of their plant.
Accordign to the vendor, the high cost of wiring means that most process plants have hundreds or even thousands of discrete measurement points that are not connected to the control system. Wireless communications, it said, allows plant managers to save up to 90% of installation cost compared with wired technologies, enabling them to collect much more data at central locations than ever before.
Mobrey magnetic float switches, which are unpowered and mechanical, are used particularly in chemical, petrochemical processing and offshore application. They are designed for use with high/low level alarms, pump control and other switching duties in locations where it was previously inaccessible or simply uneconomic to do so.
The Rosemount 702 transmitter is part of Emerson's self-organising Smart Wireless field network. The device, said Emerson, communicates discrete data to the Smart Wireless gateway for Modbus or Ethernet connection to its AMS Suite predictive maintenance software.
