ABB thermowells for Shell LNG plant in Nigeria
28 Aug 2008
London - ABB has supplied thermowells for Shell Oil’s Bonny Island refinery in Nigeria. The full assembly thermowells, complete with their associated thermometer and head-mounted transmitter, will be used to measure process temperatures in the LNG plant.
The thermowells are manufactured from 316 stainless steel, with aluminium head mounted transmitters, for good corrosion resistance at the most advantageous cost. Another requirement was the need to incorporate Shell’s own variation of the Van Stone thermowell design into the construction of the thermowells.
Andrew Dunbabin, temperature products manager at ABB’s Workington, UK factory, said: “One of the variations required by Shell was no lag length between the connection and the bore. Our skill in providing unusual or non-standard temperature measurement configurations for the oil and gas industry meant we were able to easily accommodate this requirement.”
