London - Chemical and pharmaceutical companies are continuing with apprenticeship programmes despite the finiancial downturn, according to the results of a major research project involving companies in the North East.
The study was completed by Cogent Sector Skills Council in collaboration with the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC) and its partner the National Skills Academy Process Industries.
One of the key findings indicated that major chemical and pharmaceutical employers plan to recruit 302 apprentices during 2009, despite facing extremely tough trading conditions.
The research was undertaken during November 2008 by market researchers Opening Doors, with 32% of the 409 companies approached completing the interview by phone, resulting in 131 completed interviews.
