Emerson boards PROFIBUS organisation

St. Louis, Missouri - Emerson Process Management has joined the PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation (PNO), the non-profit organisation, which owns the PROFIBUS and PROFINET industrial communication technologies.
Emerson has traditionally supported Foundation fieldbus and HART process field device buses rather than PROFIBUS DP, which is particularly established for use with electrical and discrete devices. According to the company, its membership of PNO will serve to develop PROFIBUS technologies towards improving asset and machinery health management for its customers.
Collaboration with the technical committees and working groups of PNO and its PI International affiliate will enhance asset management in devices that use PROFIBUS DP like electronic drives, motor starters, and others, said Emerson. All of these communication technologies, it noted, are united by EDDL technology, an international standard.
“We continue to include PROFIBUS DP for discrete control functionality in customer projects,” commented John Berra, chairman of Emerson Process Management. “This has worked well although there is significant room for improvement through better integration with asset management systems.
“Emerson intends to work inside of the PNO to keep the implementation of EDDL aligned across all of these protocols,” continued Berra. “We are pleased to be joining the other member companies of the PNO to develop and improve open technologies that underpin industrial automation.”
