London - The GMB trade union has backed a new consultation document which details conditions for new UK coal power stations. The report, it said, opens way to ensure the UK is a world leader in the technology, whilst securing a future for the UK coal industry
The report, ‘Future Value Of Coal Carbon Abatement Technologies To UK Industry’ by AEA Group. It states that clean coal technology could bring between £2-4 billion a year into the UK economy by 2030, and support between 30,000-60,000 in jobs such as engineering, manufacturing and procurement. The report was published alongside the Government’s consultation document ‘A framework for the development of clean coal’.
Gary Smith, GMB national secretary for Energy, said: “If we are to tackle climate change carbon capture and storage needs to become a reality. Nations like China will keep using coal regardless so without carbon abatement technology the future of the planet is in jeopardy. The Government announcement is great news. We can now hope to ensure the UK is a world leader in the technology, whilst securing a future for the UK coal industry.”
