ABB advances power system protection and control
7 Dec 2009
London - ABB has launched its next generation Relion range of protection and control products for power system applications from basic distribution to high-end transmission. The products are said to be the first to fully implement the IEC 61850 standard, which is designed to ensure interoperability and seamless communication with all compliant intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), tools and systems at any voltage.
Relion technology employs algorithms from previous generations of ABB IEDs that have now been further developed. This, said ABB, means improved protection sensitivity, accuracy and selectivity so that, for example, the earth-fault/ground-fault protection can detect faults in any cable or overhead network. Super-fast, three-channel arc-fault protection also increases personnel safety and reduces equipment damage.
The products also enable the creation of tailor-made systems for even the most demanding applications. With their compact design, Relion products are perfect for both new and retrofit installations. They can also support comprehensive communication tasks, for example, GOOSE messaging for horizontal communication, while there is a single common tool, PCM600, for all products - from application and communication configuration to disturbance handling.
The new products range from secondary distribution kiosks to intercontinental transmission grids. It consists of six product series:
· 670/650 series for transmission and sub-transmission,
· 630/615 series for distribution and industrial applications
· 610 /605 series for basic distribution and industrial applications.
