Hannover Messe to stage World Energy Dialogue

Hannover, Germany – On 20 and 21 April 2010, the international energy sector will meet at the World Energy Dialogue in Hannover, to discuss the future energy mix and cross-border supply solutions.
Presentations and panel discussions will examine the vital role of renewables and energy efficiency in the integrated, sustainable energy supply models of the future with reference to four main themes: sustainable energy supply for fast-growing, large urban centers, such as Shanghai; the future of urban mobility; interconnected energy systems; and the global opportunities associated with generating solar power in Africa.
Last December’s climate conference in Copenhagen will continue to have a decisive bearing on the world’s energy supply mix despite the differing positions taken by the participating nations. But whatever happens at the international policy level, countering the threat of rising temperatures will require the introduction of innovative, environmentally-friendly technologies and pioneering projects of the kind that will be presented at the event.
One of these projects, DESERTEC, explores scenarios for achieving a sustainable electricity supply for Europe as well as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region based on solar power generated in the Sahara Desert. The long-term objective is for the project to be able to supply a significant proportion of the MENA region’s and 15 percent of the EU’s electricity requirements by 2050.
Another feature will be the Energy Efficiency Award prize-giving ceremony. The award, which recognizes energy-efficient products and processes, is offered jointly by the German Energy Agency (dena), Deutsche Messe AG and DZ Bank, and will be in its fourth season at the Hannover event.
Staged as part of Hannover Messe, the World Energy Dialogue is a joint project between Deutsche Messe, the Federation of German Industries (BDI) and the German Energy Agency. In 2010, it will again be chaired by former federal environment minister and director of the UN Environment Program, Klaus Töpfer, who is also a founding director of the Potsdam-based Institute for Advanced Climate, Earth System and Sustainability Studies (IASS).
Hannover Messe will be held from 19 to 23 April, with Italy to be featured as its official Partner Country. The following nine flagship fairs are taking place under the umbrella of HANNOVER MESSE 2010: Industrial Automation - Energy - Power Plant Technology, - MobiliTec - Digital Factory - Industrial Supply - CoilTechnica - MicroNanoTec - Research & Technology. For 2010 the spotlight will be on industrial automation, energy, technology, industrial subcontracting and cutting-edge technologies.
