29 Jan 2010
Bechtel has elected David J. O’Reilly, former Chevron chairman and CEO to its board of directors. He joins Bechtel after a distinguished 41-year career at Chevron, including 10 years as chairman and CEO.
O’Reilly is widely credited with transforming Chevron into one of the world’s most formidable energy companies with an unwavering dedication to operational excellence and what he often referred to as “getting results the right way.”
In the 10 years following his appointment as CEO in 2000, Chevron increased its production by more than 60 percent, established the best exploration record among its peers in the industry, and advanced Chevron’s safety record to world-class levels. He also led two of the industry’s most significant and successful transactions — the 2001 merger with Texaco and the acquisition of Unocal in 2005.
A native of Dublin, Ireland, O’Reilly joined Chevron as a process engineer after earning his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from University College in Dublin. In 2002, University College granted him an honorary doctor of science degree in recognition of his outstanding career.
He is vice chairman of the National Petroleum Council. He is a member of The Business Council, J. P. Morgan International Council, the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council, and the American Society of Corporate Executives. He also serves on the San Francisco Symphony Board of Governors.
