Northumbrian Water launches pumping station upgrade
9 Apr 2010
Durham, UK – Northumbrian Water is to upgrade Benwell Pumping Station, which pumps 40 million litres of water every day to a reservoir in the west end of Newcastle. The reservoir supplies water to 30,000 homes in Fenham, Gosforth, Heaton, Jesmond and Kenton.
The work, which will begin on 15 April and take up to ten months to complete, will involve building a new, three-pump station within the grounds of the existing pumping station, to replace the existing facility. The new pumping station will be operational from late December 2010.
The project is part of a £1.2 billion investment by Northumbrian Water between 2010 and 2015 to upgrade its water and sewerage networks, according to ain Burn, project manager for the scheme.
“We are constantly looking at more effective and efficient ways to move water around the network. The new station is capable of pumping up to 50 million litres per day,” said Burn.
The existing pumping station will remain fully operational throughout the work so that there will be no interruption to customers’ water supply, according to Northumbrian Water.
