Did Hayward deserve to go?

London – It could reasonably be argued that Tony Hayward lost his job at BP simply because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Deepwater Horizon accident was likely the result of an unusual set of technical and personnel failures, well removed from his control, while the environmental, economic and political fallout from the incident was on a scale never previously endured by a corporate leader.
On the other hand, Hayward’s stumbling performances over recent months seemed symptomatic of a lack of mettle to deal, not only with the Gulf of Mexico disaster, but also with some serious, fundamental management issues at BP. Read more
