CRC still a damp squib as September deadline looms
12 Aug 2010
London – Only 1229 companies had signed up to the CRC (Carbon Reduction Commitment) Energy Efficiency Scheme as of 9 Aug, new data from the Environment Agency shows. The figure represents barely a quarter of the 5000 organisations originally expected to join the mandatory scheme by its 30 Sept deadline.
Putting a brave face on matters, and Environment Agency statement said the 1229 organisations represent over half of the electricity consumption expected to be included within the scheme. The Agency added that it is now expecting an increase in registrations “as the remaining organisations rush to sign up” before the deadline.
Moreover the EA said “revised figures” now show that the number of organisations required to participate is between 3-4000. The downgrade, explained the Agency, is because many businesses that qualify for the CRC are owned by larger conglomerates, that incorporate multiple businesses.
Tony Grayling, head of climate change and sustainable development at the EA said: “Around a third of organisations that we expect to register for the CRC scheme have registered well in advance of the deadline. We would urge the remaining businesses to sign up now, and not leave registration to the last minute.”
The CRC scheme is administered across the UK by the Environment Agency. The scheme is regulated by the Environment Agency in England and Wales, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency in Northern Ireland, and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency in Scotland.
