Topsøe technology for Chinese clean-coal project

Lyngby, Denmark – Haldor Topsøe has signed a contract with the Henan Jinkai Group, China, which is establishing a sulphur management plant as part ot a broader clean-coal gasification project.
The plant will be built alongside an ammonia plant, producing 500 ktpa of ammonia for fertiliser production. Waste gases from the process contain large amounts of sulphur compounds, among others H2S will be cleaned before release into the environment.
Topsøe’s WSA technology enables recovery of the sulphur in the off gas, converting it directly into sulphuric acid and consequently producing large amounts of superheated steam.
The WSA technology has been selected as it is economically superior compared to traditional Claus technology, the Danish group said.
The plant will recover 40 MTPD of sulphur from sulphur containing acid gas, and will produce 120 MTPD of sulphuric acid as well as 245 MTPD of superheated steam.
The plant is located in Kaifeng City in the Henan Province, China. The contract includes license, basic engineering, equipment, materials, catalysts, supervision and training.
