Insects hit Abbot's powder milk process
24 Sep 2010
Abbott Park, Illinois – Abbott has launched a recall of certain of its Similac-brand, powder infant formulas in the US, Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean.
The voluntary recall follows an internal quality review, which detected the possible presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility.
According to Abbot, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk. However, it could cause gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract.
The company said that it is now implementing a plan to address the problem in the affected manufacturing facility, and that no other facilities or products were involved in this recall.
