Interns
1 May 2011
Well done to machinery maker Guttridge – and to the graduates involved – on the launch of its internships initiative, in cooperation with Leicester University (see story).
The whole idea of recruiting interns has had some bad press in recent times with accusations of employers exploiting young people as unpaid labourers to carry out the most menial and mind-numbing of tasks.
The shame is that this Neanderthal image, which likely persists in some UK industries, deters many good employers from considering internships as part of their recruitment programmes.
However, as the experience at Guttridge shows, a well run internship scheme can offer significant benefits both to employers – in terms of meeting their skills needs– and to young people as a springboard to a successful career.
