Sellafield scoops nine industry awards for ‘unrelenting focus on safety’
25 Aug 2017
Sellafield nuclear facility has been awarded nine safety gongs by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
A RoSPA award, considered one of the most prestigious safety accolades in the industry, demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to maintaining an excellent health and safety record, said RoSPA head of awards and events Julia Small.
“Achieving the standard required is no mean feat,” Small added.
As part of the awards, judges consider entrants’ overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.
In picking up nine awards, Sellafield said its safety performance had been recognised during a year “in which we made significant progress in the clean-up of four of the most hazardous buildings in Europe”.
The plant’s retrievals director John Oliver said: “Completing this technically difficult work, while maintaining an unrelenting focus on safety, is a credit to our teams and the supply chain.”
The news follows a turbulent time for Sellafield, in which it has had to negotiate a series of proposed strikes in July, as well as a pay increase dispute this month that is currently ongoing.
