15 Aug 2023
The National Archives has granted Accredited Status to the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Archive.
The IET Archives collect and retain material relating to the organisation and its predecessors, together with the history of engineering and technology, spanning from the 14th century to the present day.
Included are the records of the IET’s 150-year history, with material from the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), Institution of of Electronic and Radio Engineers (IERE), Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE) and the Institution of Manufacturing Engineers (IMfgE) – formerly the Institution of Production Engineers (IProdE).
Anne Locker, Library and Archives Manager at the IET, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to receive this national accreditation. As one of the world’s oldest professional institutions, we have a rich history which we can trace back to the foundation of the Society of Telegraph Engineers, which held its first meeting in London in May 1871.
“Engineers throughout the ages have shaped the way we live today, and although the world has changed since Victorian times, one thing that still connects us with our history is that engineers continue to solve many of the challenges facing communities across the globe – making an ongoing difference to the world around us.”
