Fast CFD software for multiphase flows
17 Jan 2001
AEA Technology has released the latest version of its computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, CFX-5.
CFX-5 combines direct CAD import, automatic adaptive meshing and CFX's unique Coupled Algebraic Multigrid solver where flow equations are solved simultaneously.
The latest version extends the unique coupled technology of CFX-5 to multiphase flows. AEA claim that the multi-phase flows module is orders of magnitude faster in predicting chemical engineering process flows, than anything previously available.
' Our new multiphase capability makes CFX-5 the first choice for simulating complex industrial flows' says Michael Raw, CFX VP of Product Development,' it provides substantial benefits by solving the fluid equations together. This ensures that the strong inter-phase coupling which is usually a major cause of concern in traditional CFD codes is resolved in a robust and efficient manner'.
CFX-5 can efficiently predict flows such as:liquid sprays in gas within asthma drug inhalers, two separating liquids such as those found in oil water separators, gas bubbles in liquids which occur in bubble columns, slurry type flows which are encountered in waste water treatment and catalyst particles in chemical reactors.
'CFX's new multiphase technique has been implemented into our parallel algorithm making it scalable both in CPU time and memory requirements' states Georg Scheuerer, CFX European Operations Director, 'together with CFX-5's automatic meshing and native CAD import ensures that CFX-5 can tackle cases that were not thought possible before.'
