Batch output optimised and boosted
15 Jan 2000
Intellution has launched a novel batch control system that will enable manufacturers of foodstuffs, chemicals and pharmaceuticals to cut time-to-market for new products and boost productivity.
VisualBatch will provide users with `a graphical solution for plant simulation, batch execution and report generation,' the company claims. It will integrate with `open system' planning and plantfloor control systems.
Once a control strategy has been developed, VisualBatch allows users to test it by running recipes against a plant model.
The software enables product changes to be made on the fly, thereby minimising waste and downtime. An electronic batch record means straightforward tracking and traceability, to meet standards of bodies such as the US Food & Drug Administration.
Batch information is stored in a relational database, so reports can be generated. Running under Microsoft Windows NT, VisualBatch has a client/server architecture and a 32-bit batch execution engine.
Intellution, a wholly owned subsidiary of Emerson Electric, claims that VisualBatch is the first batch control product on the market to be based on the OPC specification. It connects to standard relational databases via ODBC.
VisualBatch users can configure equipment and edit recipes graphically from a single location known as the Intellution WorkSpace. This uses the Microsoft Explorer-style split-screen interface, enabling users to switch between the hierarchical browser tree and equipment and recipe editors. The software is available in both client and server configurations.
